Es war eine Mutter, die hatte vier Kinder, den Frühling, den Sommer, den Herbst und den Winter.
Der Frühling bringt Blumen, der Sommer den Klee, der Herbst, der bringt Trauben, der Winter den Schnee.
It was a mother who had four children, spring, summer, fall and winter.
Spring brings flowers, summer the clover, fall brings grapes, winter the snow.

Just as in English, the spelling is the same for the coldest season.
The pronunciation is however different, because in German the letter w is pronounced like the v in English.

It may seem ironic, but even though some countries experience winter in December, this is the month that the earth is closest to the sun.
Spring in German = Frühling

The buds explode with soft leaves and the birds start singing again, as the earth finally shakes off its thick white blanket and slowly stirs to life…
It is springtime, and in German we call it Frühling, which comes from the word früh, meaning early.
A word that can help you understand it more is Frühstuck, which means breakfast, or literally, early meal.
In both of these examples the word früh is used as a German prefix, but there are also instances when it can be used alone.
For example:
Der frühe Vogel fängt den Wurm.
(The early bird catches the worm)

Summer is here, and all roads lead to the beach!
This is an awesome time not only in Germany but in many other places, and some countries even have up to 6 months of good ol’ sun!
For most countries, summer is around July, but ironically some countries have July as the coldest month.
And just like the seasons, the names of most months in German are spelt similarly to their English counterparts, even though they are pronounced differently.
Fall in German = Herbst

We now come full circle as the earth rolls up its colors once again and makes way for the deep sleep.
Soon there will be little to see but white landscapes and grey trees, and the hearth will become the most popular spot in the house.
But it’s still not winter, so let’s make the most of what we still have.
And yes, making the most of what we have is what we live for…
