Rule No. 7

Find time to study German regularly!

Learn German with a study plan

The best methods, techniques and materials won’t help you if you don’t find time to practice German.

You have two options:

  • Option A: Create a study plan (learning schedule)
  • Option B: Use materials that you can integrate into your daily life

Option A:

Create a study plan (learning schedule)

If you study German with conventional methods then you definitely need a study plan (learning schedule) that outlines learning goals and study times.

Just like with school schedules you should develop a study schedule where you can block off days and times in your calendar dedicated to studying.

You will need to become more organized, especially if you study on your own since you need to have self-discipline and determination to complete your studies without the constant reminders of an instructor.

If you don’t create and follow a strict study plan you will study less time than you should. There are so many distractions! And if you don’t fit your learning time in between then you will never reach your goal. A goal without a plan is just a wish!

Option B:

Use materials that you can integrate into your everyday life

If you are a busy person with many obligations related to work, school or family then I know it is difficult to create a strict study plan and stick to it. Option B would be the right solution for you.

If you practice with materials that you can integrate into your everyday life then you don’t need a strict study plan.

For example, most of my students put all my “Vocabulary Lessons” and “Listen and Answer Stories” onto their iPod or mobile phone and print out the pdf scripts. They read the scripts until they understand all new words and then they listen to my audio stories 15 minutes on their way to work/school, and 15 minutes before they go to sleep. For them, it becomes a daily routine and they don’t need a study plan.

If you have read Rule No 6 carefully then you know that you only need 20 to 30 minutes per day if you train your:

  • reading comprehension
  • listening comprehension
  • grammatical comprehension and
  • speaking skills at the same time

(which students do if they practice with my materials)

So, no matter if you use option A or option B you should find time to study German regularly (Rule No. 7).
