How to use the modal verb ‘können’ in German

Today I want you to practice with the irregular modal verb ‘können’ (to be able to).

You will also learn the conjugation of the verb ‘können’.

The modal verb können (conjugation)

= to be able to (irregular verb).

  • Ich kann lachen (to laugh). 
  • Du kannst weinen (to weep / to cry). 
  • Er kann klettern (to climb). 
  • Sie kann flirten (to flirt). 
  • Es kann schleichen (to creep). 
  • Wir können tanzen (to dance). 
  • Ihr könnt Deutsch lernen (to learn). 
  • Sie können hüpfen (to bounce). 

 

Ich kann… / Ich kann nicht…

Today you can practice with the very important irregular modal verb können (to be able to).

By the way, when someone is asking you if you can something and you cannot, then you use the word nicht to negate the sentence.

How to learn with part A of the exercise

  1. Read and listen a few times.
  2. Repeat after the speaker.
  3. Make sure that you imitate the pronunciation of the speaker.
  4. After a few repetitions go on to part B (farther below).

the dog

Ein Hund kann schwimmen.
A dog can swim.

Ein Fisch kann nicht sprechen.
A fish can’t speak.

A cat can jump.

A turtle can’t run.

How to learn with part B of the exercise

Question and Answer Part:

  1. Read and listen a few times to the questions and answers.
  2. Answer the questions in the pauses (you may look also at the answers).
  3. After a few times don’t look at the answers anymore.
  4. Make sure that you imitate the pronunciation of my voice.
  5. Repeat the lesson until you can answer the questions easily.

Eine Katze kann springen.

Kann eine Schildkröte schnell rennen? 

Nein, das kann sie nicht.
Eine Schildkröte kann nicht schnell rennen.
Sie kann noch nicht mal (can’t even) langsam rennen.
Eine Schildkröte kann gar nicht (not at all) rennen.
Eine Schildkröte ist immer ganz langsam.

Kann ein Löwe laut brüllen? 

Oh ja, das kann er.
Ein Löwe kann brüllen.
Ein Löwe kann ganz laut brüllen.

Kann ein Schwein lesen? 

Nein, ein Schwein kann nicht lesen – oder?
Nein! – Ich glaube nicht. Nee, ich glaube Schweine können nicht lesen – oder?
